API 610 Pump Types — Overhung, Between-Bearings, Vertically Suspended: What the Shape Decides

A sour-water pump on a small revamp. At the 30 % model review it is an OH2 — horizontal, end-suction, centreline-mounted, sitting on a plinth at grade with a 6″ suction off the drum and an 8″ discharge rising to the rack. Piping is routed, supported, stress-checked, issued.

At the 60 % review the vendor comes back: the duty will not make its NPSH margin. The pump is now a VS4 — vertically suspended, the wet end hanging 2.5 m below a support plate at grade, discharge leaving through a separate column at the head.
