PSA 8.4 — Non-Metallic Piping: GRP/FRP to ISO 14692, and HDPE
A DN 300 GRP cooling-water header on an offshore module. The stress engineer runs it the way he runs everything: model it, apply weight, pressure and a 20 °C thermal case, read the expansion stress. It comes out at a few MPa — GRP has one twentieth the modulus of steel, so the thermal stress is trivial. No loops, no flexibility, anchor each end, supports on the same grid the steel lines use. Signed.
At the first shutdown a crack is found running circumferentially at a support, and a second at an anchored bend. Both are at the laminate surface…
