PSA 7.2 — Constant-Effort Springs: When, and How to Size One
A steam-turbine exhaust line rises out of the machine and turns into the rack. The first hanger above the turbine carries 28 kN , and because it sits on a riser off a hot machine, it travels 95 mm upward between cold and hot.
You reach for a variable (Lesson 7.1) and apply the rule:
k_max = 0.25 × 28 000 / 95 = 73.7 N/mm load swing at that rate = 0.25 × 28 = 7.0 kN cold load = 28.0 + 7.0 = 35.0 kN A 25 %-compliant variable would deliver 35 kN cold against 28 kN hot…
