PSA 7.1 — Variable Spring Hangers: Selection, Hot/Cold Load, Travel and the 25 % Rule
A 12″ hot-oil line leaves a vessel and runs along a rack. One hanger, mid-span, carries about 12 kN. The stress report specifies a variable spring: hot load 12.0 kN, upward travel 40 mm. It is installed, the system is hydrotested, and the plant runs.
Eleven years later, during a turnaround, a fitter notices that the spring can's travel stops — the pins fitted at the works so the hanger can be handled and tested as a rigid strut — are still in place, painted over.
