
PSA 6.7 — Worked Systems: a Column Circuit and an Exchanger Circuit, Modelled, Analysed, Qualified
A 40 m distillation column. The 24″ overhead vapour nozzle sits at 38.5 m, running at 120 °C. The column is welded to a skirt at grade, so by the time it is hot the nozzle has climbed:
Δ_nozzle = α·ΔT·h = 12.0×10⁻⁶ × (120 − 21) × 38 500 = 45.7 mm up Forty-five millimetres of imposed vertical displacement at the end of a 24″ line — a pipe with I = 8.089×10⁸ mm⁴ , about seven times as stiff as the 12″ lines you have been working with. Two candidate routes, both entirely reasonable on a plot plan:
