PSA 6.1 — Why Equipment Governs: the Stiffness Hierarchy and Four Allowable Philosophies

An 8″ STD carbon-steel line leaves a pump discharge and runs 10 m to the first anchor. It operates at 250 °C. Left alone the steel would get 28.9 mm longer over that 10 m. The pump's discharge flange is rated by API 610 to take 4 890 N vertically.

Ask the question the other way round, because it is the question this whole module answers: how much of that 28.9 mm is the pump allowed to resist?

A_m = π·t·(D − t) = π × 8.18 × (219.1 − 8.18) = 5 420 mm² k_ax = E·A_m/L = 200…
