PSA 5.3 — Stress-Friendly Layout: What to Tell the Layout Team, and When
A pipe rack is issued for construction. Forty lines, six of them hot, 60 m from the unit anchor to the battery limit. The steel is bought. Two weeks later the stress group finishes the critical lines and reports that the 12″ 250 °C line needs a loop — a 5 m × 2.5 m bay — and the 24″ 300 °C line needs roughly 8 m of leg, and there is nowhere to put either of them.
What follows is entirely predictable. The 12″ gets an expansion joint, which puts ≈ 210 kN of pressure thrust into two anchors…
