
PSA 5.2 — Expansion Loop Design: Sizing, Location, and Loop vs Expansion Joint
A 12″ STD line runs 60 m along a rack at 250 °C, anchored at both ends. The first analysis fails, so a loop goes into the rack at midspan: 5 m high, 2.5 m wide, drawn in the horizontal plane, four long-radius elbows. The revised run passes at 98 % of allowable. Everyone signs.
Eighteen months later the line is found to have pulled a 6″ branch off its guide, and the anchor at the west end has cracked its grout. The loop is intact, straight, and — when the line is hot — almost exactly the same shape…
