PSA 4.4 — Friction & Gaps: Values, When to Use Them, and Why the Model Will Not Converge
An 8″ pump discharge, four shoes between the pump nozzle and the first anchor. The analyst runs it with μ = 0.3 because the project specification says to include friction, and the nozzle check passes. A reviewer asks for the frictionless run as a sanity case. It also passes — but the expansion stress at the loop went up 18 % , and one of the shoes that had been carrying load now lifts off.
Two runs of the same line, both legitimate, and neither one bounds the other.
Guess first: which run should the report be based on?
Both.…
