PSA 3.2 — Thermal Cases: Design vs Operating Temperature, and Why One Case Is Never Enough
A 30 m carbon-steel run leaves a reboiler. The line list gives design 250 °C / 16 barg, normal operating 235 °C, minimum ambient −10 °C, and a footnote nobody reads: LP steam-out before maintenance . You have one box called T1 and a deadline.
Before reading on, commit: which temperature goes in T1 — and how many T-boxes does this line actually need?
The belief to kill first, because almost every fresher holds it and some 10-year engineers still do:
"Design temperature is the conservative choice, so analyse at design temperature and you are covered."
