
PSA 2.3 — Code Allowables: Sc, Sh, f, and S_A
For most metals below creep, S at any temperature is the lowest of (typically):
Su/3 one-third of tensile strength (at temp, and at room) 2/3·Sy two-thirds of yield (at temp, and at room) (creep-regime criteria — rupture/creep-rate — take over at high T) Example A106-B: Sy = 241, Su = 415 MPa → 2/3·Sy = 161, Su/3 = 138 → S = 138 MPa (20 ksi) — tensile-limited. That "20 ksi" you keep seeing in Table A-1 is Su/3 doing the talking. (B31.1 historically uses Su/3.5 — hence its slightly lower tables; pipelines use design factors on Sy instead —…
