PSA 1.1 — Why Piping Stress Analysis?
A straight pipe runs between two big vessels, welded solid at both ends. No pressure yet, its own weight is nothing special. Overnight the process warms it by 100 °C . Question — before you read on, commit to an answer: is anything wrong with this pipe?
Most newcomers say "it's just warm". The chart says the steel is at its yield point — from temperature alone. A pipe that cannot expand builds stress at ~2.4 MPa for every °C, and no pipe wall thickness helps, because the formula σ = E·α·ΔT contains no pressure, no weight and no length.…
