Refinery vs Petrochemical Plant — A Property Business and an Identity Business
Educational material. This note explains how refineries and petrochemical plants differ in purpose and therefore in engineering. The separation calculation is worked from published physical constants using a standard shortcut method, to teach a principle. It is not a design method and must not be used as one.
On one side of the fence, a plant takes crude oil and makes diesel. On the other, a plant takes naphtha and makes polyethylene pellets.
