Pipelines — Gathering, Cross-Country and Distribution Are Three Different Machines
Educational material. This note explains what the three classes of pipeline are for and what governs each. The hydraulic calculation is worked from standard fluid mechanics to teach a principle — it is a screening arithmetic, not a design method, and it takes no account of elevation profile, transients, batching, rheology or any code requirement. Pipeline design is governed by codes and by project specifications that are outside the scope of this note.
All three are pipelines. All three are usually drawn by someone with "pipeline engineer" in their job title.
