
Free Bodies, Resolution and the Moment Arm
A bracket carries 10 kN straight down . It is held by a diagonal strut running back to the column at 30° above the horizontal , plus a horizontal tie at the top.
Guess first, before you resolve anything: how big is the force in the strut?
Twenty kilonewtons. Twice the load it is carrying, and the horizontal tie carries 17.3 kN — also more than the load. Drop the strut to 15° and it is 38.6 kN , nearly four times, and the anchor bolts see 37.3 kN horizontally from a 10 kN vertical load.
Nobody gets this wrong…
